"I Pray, but GOD Seems Silent"
You pray everyday. You talk to God, but it feels like a monolog instead of a dialog. You hear about those who seem to have coffee with Jesus every morning, but you can’t remember the last month not to mention the last day you had lunch with God. Maybe He is too busy answering other peoples prayers and mine are not that important. Sometimes you just don’t know.
We become tired and discouraged in the waiting. As you recognize your entrance into a dry season you want to go back to the last shower of blessing moment, but you know you can never go back and you can’t stay here.
What’s the last thing God told you to do and have you done it yet? Maybe God won’t give you another instruction until you follow the last one He gave you. Maybe again is it how I am praying, silently or out loud. Is there something I am missing? I want to hear from God, but right now it’s like static on a radio. The station is just not coming through clear, there is interference somehow. The truth is God speaks to us every day with a sunrise and a sunset as we open the word and read the words in red Jesus the son of God speaks to us. How can we say that’s not enough?
Should we shake our fist at the sky and scream GOD WHY CANT I HEAR YOU! NO WE SHOULD NOT. Yes the Bible tells us to come boldly before the throne but not arrogantly. We can come boldly.
In Hebrews it reads; Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
We recognize the work Jesus did on the cross and we can call God father by the virtue of the blood so we now have access and we can enter in boldly. But what if were still not hearing God when he speaks.
In Psalm 5:3 David said, “O Lord, in the morning You will hear my voice; in the morning I will direct my prayer to You, and I will watch expectantly”
Sometimes we just have to believe when we pray God hears us and He will answer. Jesus Himself said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). Our part is to position our hearts to hear His still, small voice.
Many people talk to God but they don’t stop to listen—or they don’t develop listening skills. Listening truly is a skill that you can learn, whether in your natural relationships or your spiritual relationship with God. You need to “have an ear” to hear the Holy Spirit and that may mean training your spiritual ears to recognize the ways He is speaking. Jesus said, “He who has ears [to hear], let him be listening and let him consider and perceive and comprehend by hearing” (Matt. 13:9, AMP). Solomon prayed that God would give him a hearing heart (1 Kings 3:9). Many translations say “understanding heart” in that verse but the Hebrew word translated “understanding” in that verse is shama, which translates to hear, understand, listen or obey. Pray that God will give you a hearing heart, then listen and obey.
Fellowship more with the Holy Spirit. This is fundamental. If you want to hear from God more clearly, spend more time with Him and His Word. Paul told his spiritual son Timothy, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
Knowing the Word guards us from deception—and from falling into the trap of listening to other voices or even following vain imaginations. If you seek God, you will hear His voice. You don’t have to be in a quiet room to hear from God. Your soul just needs to be quiet and focused on Him. Let your spirit dominate. Listen with spiritual ears. You can hear Him!
In the Bible, God used talking animals, a flaming bush, angels, visions, and a “still small voice” to speak to his people. God can use anything to communicate to a person who is ready to hear. Nonetheless, here are a few methods which God often uses:
--God will often speak to you from another friend or leader. Often we need only see a situation from another set of eyes in order to hear God’s will. A good friend whom you trust as a committed and consistent Christ follower can bring God’s voice to you.
--The Bible has examples of most of life’s problems, pitfalls and priorities printed throughout its pages. These words from God tell of God’s general plan, and often will spell out the advice you need to find God’s will for a specific situation.
--The Bible describes God speaking in a ‘still small voice.’ God often speaks directly into your mind if you will set aside the time to pray, and wait for his answer. This practice should not be confused with some kind of cosmic vending machine. God is under no obligation to give you the answer you seek after you deposit the “coins” of an hour or two of prayer. Yet God promises that he will answer if you will pray and wait. His still small voice can be a thought in your mind, a clear and simple response to your prayers.
